Sectarianism Claiming to be nonsectarian, Chris Butler and his followers present themselves as easy-going and open minded. They will tell new recruits that they don't belong to any particular religious organisation, that there is no group to join and that there are no "hard and fast" rules to follow. They claim a person simply needs to "add" chanting to their current lives and there is no need to change their current lifestyle. That is until they are told not to eat meat, gamble, engage in illicit sex or take any intoxicants. They are also told that association with non-devotees is detrimental to their spiritual life. Then, of course, he criticizes and mocks all other religious groups, as he does in the above video with his simplistic generalized description of christians. On Sectarianism: "If someone thinks I'm a Christian', he'll be considering Moslems or Hindus to be his enemy and vice versa. Such divisions have nothing to do with real religion but are based on false bodily identification." Beyond Sectarianism and Religious Fanatacism Religion as a bodily label is superficial and not spirituality. Chris Butler is saying that sectarianism is wrong and his organisation is teaching the real religion, the real way or the "real truth". "Non-sectarian" indeed. |
